When I first picked up that camera, I was smitten. The images, the sounds, and their ability to captivate. To illuminate truth, change hearts and minds. It didn’t take me long to realize that I had just stumbled into my calling.
The career in television began for me in 1989 and it’s a journey that’s traveled through the advertising and corporate world to countries of the third world. Some unforgettable experiences. I just didn’t yet fully understand them. But God, like a chess grandmaster, countless moves ahead of me, orchestrated it all.
Twenty years and about 30 countries later, I got it. My heart was broken as I crouched with my camera to capture a young Cambodian girl sobbing through the story of her first rape. And her next rape. And how it led to abuse and captivity beyond anything I could imagine. How could injustice like this go on? I thought I had seen it all. Emaciated and dying children throughout Africa. Romanian orphans fighting AIDS. Children born with horrible deformities from Chernobyl’s nuclear fallout in Ukraine. But even amidst the broken and destitute, I had reached a point where my emotional response was no longer what it should be. I was numb. That is until God in that moment seized my heart and broke it deeply for what breaks His. And He hasn’t stopped.
So while Jyra Films certainly has and will still serve the broadcast, corporate and entertainment world, our focus has narrowed. The orphaned, the poor and the victims of injustice. The Least of These. It’s their stories. We can’t shake them. If someone doesn’t capture them, how will their voices be heard? With passion we answer the call.
